Improving Your Canvas Print Longevity

Many people want to utilise framed canvas prints of their favourite photos or artwork so they could adorn and brighten their homes and offices. Canvas prints are popular because the material gives a distinct texture unlike any other common printing substrate. In addition, the inks used are typically high-quality UV-protected archival inks that can produce clear, crisp, vibrant images. However, if they are not properly maintained, canvas prints can lose their charm. Check out this simple tips for their upkeep.

First, keep moisture off your canvas prints. While the inks are water-resistant because of their oil-based nature, the substrate itself is not. Moisture quickly weakens the canvas fibres until they tear themselves apart. In addition, dirty moisture can easily stain the fibres of the substrate. Next, do not place the prints in direct sunlight. The inks may be UV-protected but prolonged exposure to the hot and harmful rays of the sun fades the pigments in time. Thus, place your prints in a cool, dry place. In addition, if you plan to use spotlights to highlight a canvas print, make sure it does not generate a level of temperature that can damage the inks.

Next, when cleaning the frame of your prints, do not use substances with acids. Acids can destroy the canvas, turning the material into an ugly dirty yellow. It is also important to note that you should also use acid-free frame backings. Finally, regularly brush off dust, hair, and other debris with a clean, soft-bristle brush or a static-electricity-charged lint cloth. Minute particles of dirt can dull your prints and by removing these unwanted particles, you improve the longevity of your prized prints.
