Common Canvas Printing Techniques
Do you want a favourite photo to be displayed as an attention-grabbing art piece in your living room? Now you can do this through canvas printing, a process of printing photographic images to a piece of stretched canvas. The substrate is then stretched or gallery-wrapped onto a frame. Aside from printing images, this method is also used to reproduce original artwork.
There are many methods of printing an image into a piece of canvas. One of the most common ways is through dye sublimation. A number of polymer films are dyed with magenta, cyan, and yellow, three primacy colours that can be mixed to provide a virtually unlimited range of colours. The films are then fused into the canvas. This method is preferred for oil painting reproduction. Another common method is using Giclée. This is a neologism for printing images on canvas through an inkjet printer, usually an 8-colour model. Since Giclée prints use oil-based, acid-free inks, the prints are extremely durable, fade-resistant, and waterproof.
A less common method but still an effective one is using the Fotempera technique, an odd combination of the old and the new. A special colour pigment is mixed with egg whites and a solution of ammonium dichromate to achieve light sensitiveness. This emulsion is applied on canvas and dried. To print the image, a negative of the image is projected into the canvas sheet from an enlarger. The image is then imprinted by using a photographic developer, then a stop bath, then finally, a photographic fixer. The result is a top-notch, photo-realistic, museum-quality print.
